Pruning is one of the easiest services for an inexperienced crew to screw up. Common mistakes we see on Katy properties:
Flush cuts
Cuts made flat against the trunk, removing the branch collar. Prevents proper healing and invites disease. The single most common pruning mistake.
Topping
Removing the top of a tree to reduce height. Destroys the tree’s natural form, triggers weak sprout growth, and often kills the tree over several years. Still done regularly by cheap crews.
Lion’s tailing
Removing all interior branches, leaving only tufts of growth at branch ends. Creates lollipop-shaped canopies that fail catastrophically in storms.
Over-pruning
Removing more than 25% of a tree’s canopy in a single pruning. Stresses the tree, triggers excessive sprout growth, and reduces long-term health.
Wrong-season oak pruning
Pruning oaks between February and June spreads oak wilt disease throughout Katy. Devastating to the live oak population. We never prune oaks during this window.
Improper tool sterilization
Using the same unsterilized tools across properties spreads diseases like oak wilt from infected trees to healthy ones. We sterilize tools between every job.
Removing live tissue unnecessarily
Pruning live branches that didn’t need to come off. Weakens the tree and provides no benefit.
Professional pruning avoids every one of these mistakes. That’s the difference between pruning that extends a tree’s life and pruning that shortens it.
